Yeah for ITPE, my favorite (only :) podfic event of the year! And thank you so, so much for agreeing to record something for me!

In previous iterations of this letter I always emphasized how I listen to a lot of different things and like a lot of different fandoms, but mostly I've been focused pretty singularly lately. So here it goes:

Roswell: New Mexico At the moment I live and breathe RNM, and it's the fandom of my heart at the moment. I'm a huge Malex fan, like my aliens to be aliens, and don't hate Maria (or Season 2 for that matter). (What I do hate is excessive character bashing :)

Rivers of London I've been on a recent ROL splurge, relistening to the books yet again, listening and reading a lot of the fanfic. There's so much great writing and some amazing podficcing!  And this is one fandom that's absolutely awesome in terms of its output. I certainly like Peter/Thomas, but really, I love all the characters and the world, and I'd be just as happy with a totally gen story. Oh, and this time around, I've really fallen Peter/David. I mean, I always liked them, but I'm loving their ideological conflicts a lot!

And here are the fandoms I'll pretty much always be happy to listen to even if I haven't been near the fandom in a bit:

Vorkosigan This has been the fandom of the several years for me now. I love all the characters, all the pairings, canon and not. I'd love anything in that universe, though I'm pretty trope resistant here (the little that there actually is).

Teen Wolf I've actually been rereading a lot of stories and relistened to nearly anything recorded in this fandom. It's an easy fandom for me to fall back into and I'll always enjoy listening to a good Stiles/Derek story. (Preferably with werewolves, though I enjoy all kinds of good AU versions.)

XMFC Erik/Charles or gen. I love any way in which they overcome their opposition, but AUs are great as well. not a huge fan of no power AUs and I like my Erik to stay Jewish and no one to be meek and/or too nice. DOFP and Apocalypse were fine but I kinda like our myriad versions of them better :)

Generation Kill Brad/Nate or gen. I like canon stories or post. AU don't always work for me, especially when the ambiguities of their canon selves are removed. love the entire team, esp. Ray.

In general, there is little that squicks me (I've had some bad experiences with stories that have had mental disabilities as a central trope, because I'm not good with any huge power differential that could read as abuse, or rather, I need those differentials to be balanced by an inverse emotional balance, if that makes sense--and then it's actually a huge kink for me) though I do not like humor all that much (I'm just a drama/angsty girl and will take heavy plot over both introspection and funny stuff any day).

I have certain tropes I like a lot: roads not taken (i.e., not full on AUs but the ones just one step over, which also means I like my not-quite-humans to remain that way), time travel, multiverse, amnesia, bonds, and what ifs.

I like angst and h/c (though not death) and I like adventures and lots of stuff happening. I'm not as fond of domesticity, fluff, and mpreg/kids. I like my happy endings, but they can be hard won. I do listen to pretty much all pairings, but if I get to wish, then I'll have my OTPs or gen with those guys not being at odds. I don't have any sex squicks, but I don't need any for me to enjoy the fic.

And that sound like a lot, but it's definitely a what I like bestest of all wish list and not at all a a required to make me happy list! I like any and all and I like the simple fact that someone is recording for me. \o/ Yeah!

If you have a question about whether I might like a story or not, [personal profile] knight_tracer hopefully still has a good sense of what does and doesn't work for me, because we discuss these things at lengths :D Ask her if you're uncertain about a strange fandom or out there fic.

Three years of no podficcing (not even ITPE, but a new fandom has finally brought me back in, and i'm really ecited. And even more so to get back to ITPE, my favorite podfic event of the year!

Like everyone else, my listening (and reading) habits are very much dependent on mood and things, but with few exceptions I listen to a really wide variety of things (including things I don't know the first thing about the canon...or at least don't know anything until AFTER listening to podfic :)

In previous iterations of this letter I always emphasized how I listen to a lot of different things and like a lot of different fandoms, but mostly I've been focused pretty singularly lately. So here it goes:

Vorkosigan
This has been the fandom of the several years for me now. I only discovered them a few years ago but have reread all the books several times, and pretty much all the fanfic as well. I just love all the characters, all the pairings, canon and not. I'd love anything in that universe, though I'm pretty trope resistant here (the little that there actually is).

Rivers of London One of the best things after mainlining a new fandom is looking whether there's fic (and more importantly, podfic) for it. And this is one fandom that's absolutely awesome in terms of its output. I certainly like Peter/Thomas, but really, I love all the characters and the world, and I'd be just as happy with a totally gen story.

And here are the fandoms I'll pretty much always be happy to listen to even if I haven't been near the fandom (or even the source texts) in years:

Teen Wolf I've actually been rereading a lot of stories and relistened to nearly anything recorded in this fandom. It's an easy fandom for me to fall back into and I'll always enjoy listening to a good Stiles/Derek story. (Preferably with werewolves, though I enjoy all kinds of good AU versions.)

There are also fandoms, that I'd be happy to receive that are way older, like Dark Angel, Smallville, Generation Kill...

In general, there is little that squicks me (I've had some bad experiences with stories that have had mental disabilities as a central trope, because I'm not good with any huge power differential that could read as abuse, or rather, I need those differentials to be balanced by an inverse emotional balance, if that makes sense--and then it's actually a huge kink for me) though I do not like humor all that much (I'm just a drama/angsty girl and will take heavy plot over both introspection and funny stuff any day).

podcath: audacity image (podcath)
My one time a year to log into twitter and this journal--usually I at least update with a new podfic here and there, but this year has been a long stretch of nothing. So I'm even more excited to get back top podficcing with ITPE, my favorite podfic event of the year!

Like everyone else, my listening (and reading) habits are very much dependent on mood and things, but with few exceptions I listen to a really wide variety of things (including things I don't know the first thing about the canon...or at least don't know anything until AFTER listening to podfic :)

Mostly, I'm just excited to get a story. I listen in so many fandoms and tend to watch a lot of different TV where a great plotty story might just totally appeal to me if *you* love it (that's especially true for smaller fandoms like Luther, Pitch Perfect, Rizzoli and Isles, Unreal, The 100 or older fandoms like 00Q, Dark Angel, Smallville, X-Files, Queer as Folk, SGA, and many more I can't think of right now). I relisten to older stories all the time if I love the stories and the readers, so I'd be very happy if you decide to record that one story you've always wanted to but never got around to doing. I'm really, really excited to get a story. Any story!!!!

Because liking a story for me is a really complicated calculus of writing, plot, characterization, tropes, and fandom and pairing and since I can't really control the first ones too well or easily, here are the fandoms I feel most strongly about at the moment, with the characters and the things I like most. So here it goes:

Rivers of London One of the best things after mainlining a new fandom is looking whether there's fic (and more importantly, podfic) for it. And this is one fandom that's absolutely awesome in terms of its output. I certainly like Peter/Thomas, but really, I love all the characters and the world, and I'd be just as happy with a totally gen story. I'm still in the beginnings reading in ROL, but I'm pretty sure that if there were mundane AUs I wouldn't be too into it.

[ETA: Dresden Files
Not incidentally, after my fling with ROL, I went back to Dresden Files. I'd listened to all the books and some of the podfic, but I'm relistening to everything now and reading fanfic for the first time. Harry/John or gen. Somehow neither Bob nor Thomas work for me with Harry, though I love Thomas as a character.]

Vorkosigan
This has been the fandom of the past year for me. I didn't read the books until late last year (all of them, repeatedly :) and then all the fic I could find, and I just love all the characters, all the pairings, canon and not. I'd love anything in that universe, though I'm pretty trope resistant here (the little that there actually is).

Generation Kill Brad/Nate or gen. I like canon stories or post. AU don't always work for me, especially when the ambiguities of their canon selves are removed. love the entire team, esp. Ray.

MCU I came to the fandom late and with lots of resistance, only to realize belatedly that my issues are not being into Tony/Steve. Everyone else is mostly fair game! I love Darcy with anyone (well, not with Tony), Natasha everywhere (though not necessarily paired), Clint/Coulson (preferably non-Ultron compliant)Steve/Bucky (pre and post Civil War), and all team stuff, action and adventures.

Because liking a story for me is a really complicated calculus of writing, plot, characterization, tropes, and fandom and pairing and since I can't really control the first ones too well or easily--here are the fandoms I feel most strongly about at the moment, with the characters and the things I like most. MCU Steve/Bucky. I came to the fandom late and with lots of resistance, only to realize belatedly that my issues are not being into Tony/Steve. Everyone else is mostly fair game! I love Darcy with anyone (well, not with Tony), Natasha everywhere (though not necessarily paired), Clint/Coulson, and all team stuff, action and adventures, pre and post CATWS. Oh, and I watch and like AoS but don't need it to be compliant, and I’d frankly prefer non-Age of Ultron compliance, because....

Generation Kill Brad/Nate or gen. I like canon stories or post. AU don't always work for me, especially when the ambiguities of their canon selves are removed. love the entire team, esp. Ray.

Pitch Perfect Chloe/Beca. I love this pairing so much, and while there are some great podfics, the world deserves more!

In general, there is little that squicks me: I've had some bad experiences with stories that have had mental disabilities as a central trope, because I'm not good with any huge power differential that could read as abuse, so a nope on that. I do not like humor all that much (I'm just a drama/angsty girl and will take heavy plot over both introspection and funny stuff any day). I’m not a huge fan of social justice talk where it doesn’t fully fit (so Darcy lecturing on polyamory is fine; Bucky realizing he’s demi not so much so).

I have certain tropes I like a lot: roads not taken (i.e., not full on AUs but the ones just one step over, which also means I like my not-quite-humans to remain that way), time travel, multiverse, amnesia, bonds, and what ifs. I like ABO when it caters to bonds and cultural/social dynamics but less with the physical sex kinks.
Hockey I only fell into this recently, but both with the amount of fic/podfic and with the dynamic portrayed in fic I'd probably be most easily made happy with Sid/Geno or Tazer/Kaner. I haven't fond any tropes yet I strongly dislike, though threesomes don't tend to work for me here, and I tend to not like married folks in slash pairings unless it's totally AU.

podcath: sherlock on rooftop (sherlock)
So this morning Sherlock discussions were everywhere, and the one that really fascinated me was [personal profile] cesperanza's OK, I get it, I get it!. Shortly thereafter, [personal profile] astolat wrote a story in response to [personal profile] cesperanza's insight/complaint, and I decided to podfic it. But more than just sharing it here, I want to talk about the way recording the story and my own responses to it made me made sense of yesterday's episode and some of the criticism.

First, here's the podfic:

beatings will continue podcover

Because liking a story for me is a really complicated calculus of writing, plot, characterization, tropes, and fandom and pairing and since I can't really control the first ones too well or easily, here are the fandoms I feel most strongly about at the moment, with the characters and the things I like most. So here it goes:

Hockey I only fell into this recently, but both with the amount of fic/podfic and with the dynamic portrayed in fic I'd probably be most easily made happy with Sid/Geno or Tazer/Kaner. I haven't fond any tropes yet I strongly dislike, though threesomes don't tend to work for me here, and I tend to not like married folks in slash pairings unless it's totally AU.

Generation Kill Brad/Nate or gen. I like canon stories or post. AU don't always work for me, especially when the ambiguities of their canon selves are removed. love the entire team, esp. Ray.

Teen Wolf Derek/Stiles or gen. present, future, AU, is all good. Just not too puppy pile, fluffy, domestic. Not a huge fan of non werewolf AUs. Alpha/beta/omega and knotting not a kink but not an issue either.

XMFC Erik/Charles or gen. I love any way in which they overcome their opposition, but AUs are great as well. not a huge fan of no power AUs and I like my Erik to stay Jewish.

I'm not as fond of domesticity, fluff, and mpreg/kids (unless the latter doesn't lead to the former). I like my happy endings but they can be hard won.

\o/ Yeah!

And I'm not sure this is a thing that's done, but if you have a question about whether I might like a story, [personal profile] knight_tracer has a pretty good sense of what does and doesn't work for me, because we discuss these things at lengths :D Ask her if you're uncertain about a strange fandom or

I love reading. I always have. Like many people in fandom, I escaped early into books and the fantastic and different worlds it offered. Like many fans in fandom who came of age pre-Internet, books were something personal and intimate, and while I didn’t know (m)any peers who shared my strange interests, I knew that they had to be out there, older, other places, but I wasn’t quite so alone when I was with my books and threw myself into the past and future, the sometimes familiar but often quite unfamiliar worlds. I've never done an exchange before, so I'm a bit uncertain about what I should and shouldn't include (for that matter, I seem to be a bit uncertain about what it is I like and don't like, because so much of it depends on the context and the story). And really, I'm just excited to get a story and I listen in so many fandoms, but these are the ones I feel most strongly about at the moment, with the characters and the things I like most. So here it goes:

Bandom MCR Frank/Gerard or gen. any time early to now is great. AU is great (though not necessarily killjoy). love all the band members and all the other bands too, but my heart's with Frank and Gerard.

Generation Kill Brad/Nate or gen. I like canon stories or post. AU don't always work for me, especially when the ambiguities of their canon selves are removed. love the entire team, esp. Ray.

Suits Harvey/Mike or gen. i'm pretty easy here. love canon and case files, love AUs, don't mind bdsm/slave fic.
